Licorice lane

traffic is stopped on

the tall wetlands bridge

the cool coastal fog

makes me feel safe

and the pretty wild fennel

and I buy a mystery vegetable

most times they go half bad

before I can figure out how to eat them

 

I giggle now when I think

how surprised I was to find that

fresh ginger wasn’t pink
