Day 2

Today’s piece is a drawing in conte crayon and watercolor pencil done from the Amtrak train at the Sacramento station while waiting to head into the Bay Area. Even though the station is in downtown Sacramento, the views from the train yard were of dilapidated buildings covered in rust. I’m drawn (pardon the pun) to the textures that result from aging surfaces in urban settings, and with the telephone poles woven throughout the scene, I enjoyed the line quality of the view from my seat.

This was done in about 5 minutes. I also wrote this poem, amongst others, in my quiet time on the train. (Feel free to skip ahead if you’re not big on poems. I won’t judge. 🙂

  1. Actually I was mentioning that to help explain why it’s such a plain drawing, not to brag! A lot of my drawings when I was younger were very, very detailed and took forever. I discovered in college that there’s major freedom in just doing a quick drawing instead of worrying about every line. 😀
